Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has revealed the availability of a new 5G smartphone – the Oppo 5G. The smartphone is among the first phones available in the world to use the new 5G network technology and it’s only available in certain markets in China.
The 5G Oppo phone is an enhancement to the Oppo A35s that has recently arrived in the market. It offers 5G connectivity at speeds of up to 1GB a second and its front camera comes with an advanced selfie camera capable of video calling, low light photos, a real time feature called AR Link, and artificial intelligence.

The new 5G Oppo phone is powered by the top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and features a 4GB RAM. Oppo claims that it features 20 percent more memory than the Oppo A35s, but the specs of the phone aren’t yet known. The device uses a 3400 mAh battery, which is also described as being 20 percent larger than the one in the Oppo A35s.

Other features of the phone include a dual-camera setup, 4G/5G dual standby, and Android 8.1 Oreo. The 5G Oppo smartphone is priced at 128,999 RMB, which translates into approximately $1888 in the US, in China, and there’s currently no indication of whether or not the phone will be available outside of China.
Oppo has built a reputation for building cheaper smartphones that offer good specs and performance for a budget price. However, the 5G Oppo phone will have to be far better than other 5G smartphones released by rivals to rival Oppo.
Of course, we’re expecting to see the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 to become the first 5G smartphone. Samsung recently announced the phones will be available in Korea on December 14, although it hasn’t revealed any more details about 5G technology at the time.
What is 5G and how does it work?
5G technology is built to offer ultra-fast mobile broadband, wireline-like speeds and increased capacity for broadband and streaming services. It supports much higher speeds, much more bandwidth, a much greater network capacity. With 5G, internet users will be able to consume and upload files at unprecedented speeds.
We will get to experience 5G technology at the next few Olympics, but even now we are seeing early technology being launched, and it has been almost two years since the 3G/4G network has launched in the US. While 5G technology may not be around right now, there are lots of people, businesses, and organizations already investing in 5G and developing new services and technologies.
Will we see 5G in smartphones?
There are plenty of companies trying to build 5G technologies, and lots of smartphones are being released around the world. However, it’s not yet known which smartphone brands will eventually support 5G. The 5G technology isn’t just about faster speeds, it’s also about enabling data transfer at unprecedented levels, connecting users in places where current networks can’t reach, and delivering better battery life.
With the arrival of 5G technology, we will also see a new device range from smartphone manufacturers such as Oppo and other manufacturers that offer 5G solutions to the market, but the rollout and timing of 5G in smartphones might take a few more years.

What smartphone manufacturers have announced support for 5G?
At the end of November, Samsung announced a broad range of devices that will support 5G technology and improved 4G. Samsung has previously said it will also offer a 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S10, but at the time Samsung did not specify a date of launch. It is expected the 5G S10 will be released next year.
Another smartphone manufacturer offering 5G technology right now is OnePlus. It says it will be launching the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T around February of 2019, which indicates the 5G version will be released in late 2019. The OnePlus 7T will likely launch with 5G capabilities, as it was announced before OnePlus 7 came out.
Apple is not as far behind as some other smartphone manufacturers with 5G technologies. Apple has said it plans to launch the 5G version of the iPhone in early 2020, while it has also revealed an early prototype of a 5G iPhone for possible trials. Apple is expected to showcase the iPhone at its annual press conference on September 12, at which time it will probably reveal more details about its 5G plans.

What about Android phone manufacturers?
Android smartphone manufacturers have a few options for releasing 5G smartphones, including using Qualcomm’s X50 modem or they can use Qualcomm’s X24 modem that supports 5G technology. Apple does not currently have a 5G smartphone, but it is expected to launch one next year.
At the moment, the likes of Huawei and Oppo, as well as other smartphone manufacturers, are developing their own 5G technologies that they plan to launch in the market. Oppo has said it has completed 5G research for more than five years, and it expects to launch the 5G version of the Oppo A35s smartphone next year, but its roadmap doesn’t state when the 5G version will be released.
Oppo hasn’t given us a timeline for when it will launch its 5G smartphone, but it will likely come out in the next few months. Oppo seems confident in the technology, and if you are interested in seeing the 5G smartphone you can expect to see it on Oppo’s social media channels.
